Hebrews 6:9-13

Hey, hey, good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions this morning. We're at Hebrews chapter 6 verses 9 through 13 We're gonna be talking a little bit better than last time. This is about having hope That we are actually in the Lord and not those that well we talked about yesterday. So let's have some coffee We'll pray and we'll get into God's Word Let's pray.
Father, we thank you so much for this day. Thank you for your word. Thank you for the promise that your word does not return void. Father, we pray that you please help us to understand your word. Please teach us to. not just know it but that it would be buried deep in our hearts that it would produce in us love you love for others and a life that's centered and devoted to your glory in jesus's name we pray amen all right so we're at hebrews chapter 6 verses 9 through 13 But beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you. Yes, things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner. For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love, which you have shown towards his name, in that you have ministered to the saints and do minister. And we desire that each one of you should show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
Well, we got three questions to ask. A, what is this about? B, what's the best verse to summarize this? And C, what are we called to do? So what is this about? Well, last time we had talked about those. That is a pretty hard passage, right? For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened and have tasted the heavenly gift and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come if they fall away. And so last time it was really hard about that.
But here she says, I'm convinced that's not you. But beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you." He says, I don't think that's you. I don't think you've tasted the heavenly gift and are turning away. I think you've just kind of gotten stuck. And so he says, I'm confident that you are not those who are apostate. I don't think that's who you are is what the author of Hebrews is saying.
So he says, no, no, no, there's things that come with salvation that when I look in your life, it looks like they're there. And what's he talking about? That there's things that accompany salvation that give him confidence that they're not those who have fallen away. Well, he says, for God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love. which you have shown towards his name.
You have served the Lord towards his name. And how have you done that? Well, you've served others and you're even serving now. You're continuing to serve as a present active participants. They're continuing to be servants in the church. They're continuing to serve people. And so he tells them, I'm certain because these things flow from your salvation. You're not one who's. Had the heavenly gift and walked away. I don't think that's you. No, I don't think it's you. But you do need to be notice verse 11 and 12.
And we desire that each one of you should show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end. He doesn't want them to lose their hope. He wants them to have assurance. And so he wants them to be diligent. to not just have been working, but to keep on in the faith. That you do not become, oh, I love this word, this is a hard one for me, sluggish. That you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
Next time we get together, we're gonna talk about an example of who was patient to endure and to obtain the promise. What's this all about? Well, we need to, as Christians, take seriously what the first eight verses were talking about, that we can't be those who apostatize, right? We need to make sure that we're listening seriously to the Lord about that.
But God is not unjust. He's not going to cast us away. He who began a good work in us will complete it unto the day of perfection. As the author is writing here, he's saying there are things that seem to accompany salvation and your life seems to line up with that. But don't become sluggish, stay diligent, be patient as you endure for the promises.
So that's what he's getting at, right? You've become sluggish, maybe a little bit dull, right? That's what he's talking about before, right? You've kind of stopped at the milk. You should be eating meat, you should be teaching, but instead you're needing to be taught. And so he's kind of like, guys, come on, come on, keep going, keep progressing. And so that's what this is talking about. What's the best verse to summarize this? Well, I have verse 11 underlined, but I also have part of verse 12. If someone could convince me that maybe this is really talking about verse 10, let me know down in the comments what you think.
But last see calling, what are we called to do? Are you serving now? Doing the good works for God's name? Are you just doing your works and your labors out of love? Are you serving now? It's one of the things I love about even we're about to elect deacons in our congregation. And one of my favorite passages is in 1 Timothy 3, verse 13, after all the qualifications of deacons, there's a great assurance that comes from serving. Because it assures our heart of what we truly love and who we truly love. And that's our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
So don't slack off. It's easy to just kind of become sluggish and to let our diligence slip away. And I want to encourage you today to keep on loving. Keep on seeing others who are in need, to keep on desiring to help others and to serve God's name, to see his name glorified to all the earth and especially in your local church and in your local community. Continue to love others, continue to love God and continue to love others. Do not grow fluggish, do not. grow weary the days may drag on the decades may continue and the promises may seem far away but brothers and sisters it is appointed for every man to die once and then after this the judgment there is a great reward in serving the lord and a confidence that we can have we do love our god we have served others and so seek after that reward don't grow sluggish but stays diligent for God's glory.
Let's go ahead and pray. Father, we pray that we would be patient in trusting in your promises, that we would hold on to you and know that you indeed are God. Lord, we pray that you would please spur us on towards love and good deeds. Lord, we know that when we even give a cup of water and we do so in your name to the least of these, Lord, we've done it unto you. So Father, we pray that you would make us a nation of servants, serving you, our Lord, and loving others. Lord, we pray that you would please help us to not grow weary. Lord, let us love you and love others well.
Father, we thank you. that when we look at our lives, there are practical ways that we can see and have assurance of the hope that is in us. Please keep us from turning back. In Jesus's name. Amen.
